The Ghana Indian Malayalee Association (GIMA) has announced its Onam celebration, set for Sunday, 22nd September 2024, at the Aviation Social Centre in Accra. In light of the recent disaster in Wayanad, Kerala, GIMA has chosen to observe this year’s Onam in a more subdued manner, focusing on unity and standing in solidarity with those affected by the calamity. To further this cause, a portion of the funds saved from the event will be donated to assist those in distress in Wayanad.
Onam, the festival that celebrates the harvest season in Kerala, is traditionally marked with grand festivities. This year, GIMA intends to bring the spirit of Onam to Ghana, albeit with a sense of purpose and empathy. The celebration will commence on September 7, 2024, with a cricket match at Apenkwa Astro Turf, setting the tone for the events that follow.
The main event on September 22nd will feature a series of cultural performances, including the elegant Thiruvathira dance, a skit that embodies the essence of Kerala’s cultural richness, and other traditional activities that will resonate with the spirit of Onam. Adding an element of excitement and camaraderie, the day will also Include a tug of war, which promises to be a highlight of the celebrations.
No Onam celebration would be complete without the traditional feast, or Sadhya, which will be meticulously prepared, offering a taste of Kerala’s culinary heritage to all attendees. This feast will serve as a reminder of the rich traditions that Onam embodies.
GIMA extends a warm invitation to everyone to join in these celebrations, not just as a cultural event but as a gesture of unity and compassion. This year’s Onam is an opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate their shared heritage, and contribute to a meaningful cause.
