On January 11, 2025, in celebration of the sacred Makaravilakku festival of Sabarimala in Kerala, devotees gathered at the Hindu Monastery Temple in Odorkor, Accra, for the 29th Annual Ayyappa Pooja. Organized by the Ayyappa Seva Sangam Ghana under the leadership of Mr. Anil Kumar and his dedicated team, the event brought together around 400 devotees from Indian and Ghanaian communities, fostering prayer, unity, and cultural harmony.
A unique highlight of the event was the recreation of the Sabarimala temple, complete with its iconic 18 steps (Padi). This thoughtful arrangement offered devotees a spiritually enriching experience, echoing the sanctity of the renowned pilgrimage site in Kerala, India.
The evening began at 6:00 PM with the recitation of Vishnu Sahasranamam, setting a serene and meditative atmosphere. This was followed by the ceremonial Lighting of Lamps, symbolizing divine blessings. The temple resonated with the soulful chants of “Swami Saranam Ayyappa,” invoking a deep sense of devotion and unity among the attendees.
The Bhajan session that followed was a standout moment. Led by members of both Indian and Ghanaian communities, the harmonious singing and enthusiastic participation created a spiritually uplifting experience. The session lasted until 9:00 PM, strengthening the bond among those present.
The evening concluded with the Pooja and Deeparadhana, marking the pinnacle of devotion. Prasadam was then distributed, spreading blessings and joy among the devotees.
The celebrations extended to January 12 with an Annadanam held at the temple. This act of sharing food embodied the values of compassion and community service central to Ayyappa worship. Devotees and visitors joined in this selfless offering, fostering gratitude and togetherness.
The growing participation in the Ayyappa Pooja each year reflects the increasing unity and devotion within the community. The collective chanting of “Swami Saranam” deeply resonated with everyone, leaving a lasting spiritual impact.
Through its unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting Ayyappa traditions, the Ayyappa Seva Sangam Ghana continues to inspire and unite the community. This annual celebration remains a cherished and spiritually significant event, promising to flourish in the years ahead.
